Hey friendly friends! I hope your weekend has been filled with much grace and peace so far. I have an exciting new sewing tutorial to share with you. While I love being bald I often like to spice up my head a little bit with weaing lots of headbands, head scarves, and bandanas. I have gotten creative over the years with what I wear and have come up with a fabulous new style of headband which is so comfortable and very classy and I cannot wait to share it with you, so here you go :) Comment if you have any questions or tried making one yourself, I would love to know how it turns out.
Materials Needed:
- Piece of fabric for headband (I used cotton and the measurement was 5 inches wide by 38 inches long, adjust according to the size of your head and preference)
- Some scraps for the flower (I used an old t-shirt)
- Sewing pins
- Scissors
- Two 1 inch pieces of elastic
- Thread ripper (hopefully not, but sometimes its inevitable)
- Sewing machine and thread...the usual!
Directions:
1. Cut out your piece of fabric. Mine was 5x38 inches, this all depends on personal preference and size of your head. Mine was a thicker head band but ultimately you want to decide how many inches thick you want it to be and then times it by two since you will be folding it in half.
2. Fold your piece of fabric in half hot dog style (anyone remember that from elementary school days?) so the two right (good) sides are together and pin it down.
3. Sew the seam (sometimes it helps to iron the folds as you go so the edges line up easier). After you sew the seam, making sure the two ends are not sewn shut, pull the fabric through so the right side is showing.
4. This is the somewhat tricky part. To this point you should have a long tube. Now you are going to start on the right side and work your way to the left making folds. First fold about half an inch over to the left, place your thumb where mine is and then bring the extra piece back to the right. It's hard to put into words, the picture is the most helpful.
5. Then pin this fold down.
6. Continue on folding and pinning about every half inch, or however big/small you want your folds, until you get to the end. Leave about 1-2 inches on each end to finish it off.
7. It should look something like this...
8. Now comes the fun part...zip your sewing machine from top to bottom of every fold, being sure to hold it down as you go so that it stays lined up.
9. Now depending on the size of how your headband fits so far you may want to finish it off with some elastic. If it fits fine then just sew the two ends within each other and you are good. I used about an inch of elastic and put it inside of the tube, one on top and one on bottom. Fasten them down on one side.
10. Now feed it through the other end, being sure it isn't twisted and stretch it a bit. Then sew it down and do the same for the bottom piece.
11. You can either just sew up the side or if you're getting fancy and have enough space you can make it into another small fold to disguise it a little bit.
12. Now unto the flowers. Start rolling the fabric up into a little ball and twist the fabric around that starting point (you want to be twisting really tightly). You can see in the picture the fabric to the right will continue to be worked around the center point.
13. Slowly but surely it will start to form into a rolled flower :)
14. You may have to hot glue certain points along the way so that they don't overlap.
15. Tuck under the end and secure it down with some hot glue and you are all set.
16. I added some buttons for a little flair.
17. Hot glue the flowers unto the headband where you find most comfortable and you are now finished with your headband, congratulations :)
